Today was a mixed bag all around. We started out fishing in the shallows which, unfortunately, started us off with tiny fish. We went deeper, farther west of the peninsula, which got us alternating quality fish. Nice fish, small fish, nice fish small fish, big fish. So…. we went farther south and drifted a long ridge in 200 feet of water and our quality was getting better. We ended the fishing portion of the day with several bottom fish as well as mixed blues and yellows. Most folks managed to get a pretty nice bag of fish together.
On to the crabbing portion of the trip now. I was really happy to see that most of the commercial gear that was all over us was moved away either late yesterday or this morning. We pulled 37 crabs for 19 passengers and since one of our fishers didn’t want any crabs, everyone went home with 2. The crabbing was a lot like the fishing was. 4-5 crabs in one pot and the next pot would be empty. All in all, today was a lot of fun with some great people. Also, the reduced pressure on the crab grounds leaves me hopeful for the next several trips.
