Today reminded me of something that my old boss used to tell me all the time when I was a young Captain just starting my career. He would regularly say “The harder you work, the luckier you are.” Well, today was a lot of work and a lot of fun. We hit the live bait again because we had a light load (8 anglers) and the forecast was for less than 10 knots of wind all day. The weather guy was WRONG! We got to the Carmel highland area and started fishing but within 10 minutes we had 20 knots of wind right on top of us. We stuck it out for a little while and the current started ripping right up against the wind. It wasn’t a lot of fun so I decided to abandon the Highlands for the calm waters of Carmel bay. It was very nice to be tucked up against the rocky coast and it would have been a lot nicer if those fish decided to bite. After a bit of grinding out some fish, good buddy Captain JJ on our other boat the Chubasco called me up to let me know he got some fish to start biting, so… we pulled the lines and ran the 4 miles to where he left off on his 4 hour trip. Thankfully the fish were still interested and we had premium baits ready for action. We got one nice big ling, lots of shaker lings, some nice Boccaccios and Vermillions as well. Lots of other rockfish like Starry and yellows were there to top the bags off for us. Deckhand Alfredo worked his tail off keeping everything squared away and running smoothly. It was great fun with a great group of guys.
